Anyone remember the Chegg Burger!?
Greasy Vera’s was a place late night revellers used to love to go to line there stomach after a night out. Shift workers, Policemen, Taxi drivers used to descend on the little van based at Neepsend. Long before the lies of McDonalds came to the steel city, pos club eating was limited – and Vera’s certainly filled that gap!
It was originally situated by the cement works on Mowbray Street (Kelham Island), long before it moved to Swinton Street behind the old petrol station. Run by husband and wife, Les and Vera, the old Austin Van was converted into a Burger Van adding a porta cabin in later years. John Smith took over and introduced the legendary “Chegg Burger” a Cheeseburger with egg that was only available here – and it proved to be a wonderful delicacy!
Famous faces included Gene Pitney taking a bite after appearing at the likes of Fiesta club (latterly Roxy’s) The cabin closed once the portacabin was stolen. Despite a few attempts at re-opening, the site was cleared and now stands new apartments and studios.
We cant bring you a Chegg Burger, but we can bring you a keep sake in the form of a keyring in the legendary sign! It is approximately 100mm long and 15mm width
